Reinterpreting An Icon
Open Gallery x Vincent Van Gogh explores the deconstruction of an icon - reframing Van Gogh’s most recognisable works into culturally relevant garments while preserving artistic integrity.
The intention was to embed narrative, care and respect into each product. This was not a novelty collaboration, but a reinterpretation grounded in research, cultural context and design sensitivity.
Across the range, artworks were selectively deconstructed into line drawings, tonal embroideries and layered compositions. Elements were isolated, rescaled and repositioned to build narrative depth across garments rather than single-print statements. Supporting works expanded the story beyond a singular hero, creating a cohesive collection rather than a graphic drop.
Sunflowers became the hero execution, translated into a detailed embroidered artwork panel integrated into denim shorts. The piece reframed a museum masterpiece as functional streetwear through considered craft, placement and materiality.
The collaboration was executed directly with the Van Gogh Museum. I initiated the connection between Factorie, the licensing agent and the Museum, leading cross-continental creative alignment and facilitating concept development between the Dutch museum team and our design studio to ensure artistic integrity and contemporary relevance were maintained.
This project demonstrates the ability to translate iconic cultural IP into modern, crafted streetwear while balancing creative depth with commercial viability.
